About the Council for Geoscience Library Internship 2026

The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is offering 20 Library Internship opportunities on a 24-month contract. This programme is aimed at candidates who want to gain practical experience in library science, archives, records management, and digital information systems.

The internship focuses on supporting the digitisation, organisation, and preservation of CGS information resources. Interns will assist in converting physical materials into digital formats while ensuring accurate metadata capture and improving access to information.

  • 10 Posts: Pretoria
  • 2 Posts: Polokwane
  • 2 Posts: Bellville
  • 2 Posts: Pietermaritzburg
  • 2 Posts: Upington
  • 2 Posts: Gqeberha

Stipend and Duration

  • Duration: 24 months
  • Stipend: R13 000 per month

Key Responsibilities

Interns will be expected to:

  • Assist with digitisation of library and publication resources
  • Organise, sort, and prepare materials for scanning
  • Capture and verify metadata for digitised resources
  • Handle fragile and valuable information materials carefully
  • Support quality control processes to ensure accuracy
  • Assist with records management and filing
  • Provide general support to library and publications staff

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • National Diploma in:
    • Library and Information Science, or
    • Archives and Records Management, or equivalent

A Bachelor’s degree in the above fields will be an added advantage.

Knowledge and Experience

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Basic understanding of library and information management principles
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Familiarity with digitisation processes (advantageous)
  • Exposure to scanning equipment or digital repositories (beneficial)
