About the Mechanical Apprentice Programme

The Mechanical Apprentice Programme offers practical workplace exposure within facilities maintenance and mechanical operations at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Successful candidates will work closely with the Mechanical Supervisor and other stakeholders to support planned and reactive maintenance on various mechanical systems and equipment.

The contract duration is between 6 and 9 months.

Mechanical Systems and Equipment Exposure

Learners may gain experience working with:

• HVAC systems
• Bridges
• Pump stations
• Control panels
• Lifts and escalators
• Building Management Systems (BMS)
• Air-conditioning plant rooms
• District cooling systems
• Seawater plants

Key Responsibilities

Successful apprentices will assist with:

Planned and Reactive Maintenance

• Conducting preventative maintenance
• Responding to mechanical breakdowns
• Fault finding on mechanical systems
• Monitoring equipment using Building Management Systems
• Supporting maintenance and replacement of assets

Site Inspections and Safety

• Conducting site walks and inspections
• Performing quality control checks
• Identifying and reporting safety hazards
• Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations

Service Provider and Stakeholder Management

• Assisting with supplier and contractor coordination
• Monitoring service provider performance
• Communicating maintenance updates to tenants
• Building professional working relationships

Additional Duties

• Supporting ad-hoc maintenance projects
• Working overtime, weekends, and public holidays when required
• Performing duties in physically demanding environments including sewer pump stations

Requirements

Applicants should:

• Have a technical or mechanical background
• Be physically fit
• Have good communication skills
• Be willing to work shifts, overtime, weekends, and public holidays
• Be able to work in a team environment
• Have an interest in mechanical maintenance and facilities operations
